"GHAN-ESSAYS", no. 11 ("Notes for A.R. Aims of missionary activities", 2pp.); no. 12 ("Andreas Rijs' journey to Akim" - translation); no. 7b (A. Rijs, A visit to Kumasi, Übersetzung mit Fußnoten vonElias). Elias discusses African religion and Christian mission by the example of one of the first successfull missionaries in Ghana, Andreas Riis (from the Basel Mission Society). The following text gives some basic information: "Johann von Richelieu (Governor of the Danish Guinea Company) contacted the newly founded Basel Mission Society in Switzerland in 1822, to persuade them to come and assist, with promises of government support. The first group of four missionaries arrived in 1828, followed by three more in 1832, with all but two of the unacclimatized pioneers succumbing to death. Yet, the untiring endeavours of the survivors Henke and Andreas Riis laid a solid and enduring foundation. For three years Henke advised and encouraged the chiefs to send their children to the Government School at Osu, while Riis set his sights on the interior, away from European influences on the coast, and went to Akropong where he was warmly received, compelling him to write back to headquarters "not to weary in their efforts to convert the people". On his second return to Akropong in 1843, Riis, in order to convince the people to embrace the new religion, brought along 24 converted freed slaves from Jamaica, and from this stage onwards, the propagation of the Gospel was steady, tied to the expansion of education" (from History of Ghana) |
